The writing in this book spans a six-year period and some of the insights go back to the early seventies. I would like to gratefully acknowledge the staff and elders of Peninsula Bible Church, Palo Alto, California, whose faithful teaching and lifestyle shaped the beginning of many of those thoughts. I want to thank John Tyll and CCM magazine for providing, through a regular column, an opportunity to develop as a writer, and an obligation to discover, once a month, where God was working — and not working — in my life. Thanks also to Dan and Kathy Cunningham and their children who have always seen me as an artist, even when I couldn't. And special thanks to Kathy whose unselfish discernment and brilliant literary criticism were always only a phone call away. And finally, I want to thank my wife, Marti, for all the times she made me frustrated by forcing me to face what I knew was not my best.
