who became a "sister" to me

through caring for our Mom

"MOM" was the name her close friends called her. To the world, she was known affectionately as "Ethel" . . . . .

Ethel Waters: I Touched a Sparrow

is the story of the "Golden Ethel," the Ethel who turned in her senior years and after a remarkable stage and screen career, to singing and inspiring people about the Lord. The woman who had introduced the world to such classic songs as "The St. Louis Blues," and "Stormy Weather" still held her audiences spellbound at Billy Graham Crusades as she praised the Lord and made them feel loved.

   Twila Knaack, who met Ethel at a Crusade and subsequently became like a daughter to her, shares the intimate details of Ethel's last years — her declining health, her loneliness, her never-failing sense of humor, combined with her love of the Lord that endured it all. Through Twila's eyes you'll see Ethel in her many moods. You'll also share the reminiscences of Ethel — humorous and poignant — provided by many people who knew and loved her.

   Ethel Waters: I Touched a Sparrow is a book you will cherish — the story of one of the best-loved, universally acclaimed talents of our century. Here is a portrait of Ethel Waters — a woman whose honest faith will enrich your life.

"a homely, simply written and touchingly honest memoir" — Publisher's Weekly

About the Author: Twila Knaack comes from a small town in Iowa, about as far as can be imagined from Ethel Waters' beginnings. For the last seven years of Ethel's life, she was her helper and companion. Twila is an executive secretary for World Wide Pictures in Burbank, California. Previously she was an executive secretary for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Both positions have required extensive travel in this country and abroad.

Ethel Waters wrote her own autobiography in 1972 entitled, To Me It's Wonderful. Click here to see if one of the thousand libraries which hold it is near you.

The song which Ethel Waters is best known for singing is His Eye Is on the Sparrow  (based on Matthew 10:29-31)

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy,

I sing because I’m free,

For His eye is on the sparrow,

And I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,

And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;

Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,

When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,

I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
