Acknowledgments

For the better part of a decade, Brenda Jose of Multnomah Press quietly urged me to undertake a book. Even though I had written many an article and, through 1990, 142 NAE Washington Insight newsletters, the prospect of authoring a book had always seemed too daunting a task. Without Brenda's well-timed encouragements, backed by the assurances of publisher John Van Diest, this book would not have been added to the collection anticipated in Ecclesiastes 12:12. I could not be more grateful to them.

Steve Halliday must have drawn the short straw, because he was assigned to be my editor. It was his lot to explain to this first-time author that the original manuscript was not perfect. Steve did that with sufficient grace that, together, we sharpened the book's focus, following which he edited with skill and wisdom. Any editor who in turn can tolerate the author editing his editing, deserves praise.

I have no greater respect and admiration for any national leader than for United States Senator William L. Armstrong of Colorado. He understands full well the culture war in which our nation is engaged, and has courageously championed traditional values in battle after battle. I am honored that he consented to write the Foreword for this book.

While this book was written evenings and weekends rather than on company time, I nonetheless pay tribute to a group of competent professional colleagues in NAE's Washington office: Richard Cizik, Tim Crater, Forest Montgomery, Brian O'Connell, and Curran Tiffany, with my assistant Jodie Koan keeping things humming as office manager. Over the years, each has played a significant role in honing my thinking and battling for common convictions.
